The Ontario Museum Association (OMA) is seeking a creative and strategic communications emerging professional who is capable of executing a range of communication tactics to improve engagement and drive awareness of the Ontario Museum Association, its services, and the cultural heritage sector more broadly through the role of Communications & Digital Initiatives Assistant. 

The successful candidate will work as part of the OMA team and engage with a variety of stakeholders to support OMA’s internal and external communications strategies and gain experience maintaining a multi-channel public relations approach within the cultural heritage and non-profit sector, and will meet the following eligibility criteria:

Essential:

  • Post-secondary education diploma or degree in marketing, communications, advertising or public relations.
  • 2+ years of experience in communications, marketing, social media, and/or public relations
  • Well-organized with ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with social media management and content creation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work as part of a project team
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure consistency in messaging.
  • Knowledge of marketing best practices and trends, including analytics and SEO.
  • Understanding of digital marketing channels and technologies, including social media, email, websites, and search engine marketing.
  • Experience with content management systems and platforms – Including but not limited to: Canva, Adobe Creative suite, Buffer, Mailchimp (etc.)
  • Proficiency with MS 365 (outlook, MS Word, Excel, Teams, Sharepoint, etc)

Desirables

  • Experience working in cultural heritage
  • Bilingualism (French) and/or Indigenous Language(s) knowledge/ability
  • Strong interest in or experience in graphic design
  • familiarity with Client Relationship Management (CRM) software

The Communications & Digital Initiatives Assistant position at the Ontario Museum Association is a full-time (35 hours per week at $21/hour) for a 6-month contract, starting Monday, September 8th, 2025, and ending Friday, March 20th, 2026.  This is a hybrid role, requiring at least two days in-office per week in our downtown Toronto location.  Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCW-BCH employment program.

The Communications & Digital Initiatives Assistant will:

  • Support the development and execution of the OMA’s communication strategies and marketing campaigns across various channels, including social media, email, website, press releases, and blog, to promote OMA services, events and resources.
  • Help create compelling content for the OMA’s website, social media channels, and other communication platforms to drive engagement with target audiences (internal and external).
  • Manage administrative side of the OMA’s social media accounts, including content creation, monitoring engagement, scheduling posts and analyzing metrics.
  • Track and report on the success of campaigns and social media engagement through marketing analytics and SEO.
  • Write blog posts and copy for social media content.
  • Update the OMA website.
  • Write and edit press releases, articles, and other communications materials
  • Attend weekly meetings with OMA staff team to discuss campaigns, ideas and overall priorities.
  • Collaborate with other OMA staff and other internal stakeholders to help create and execute launch communication strategies, tactics, events, and resources consistent with OMA messaging and brand identity.
  • Support the development and management of key relationships with media outlets and industry influencers to increase the OMA’s visibility and reach.
  • Monitor industry trends and competitor activity to identify opportunities and inform the OMA’s integrated communications and public relations strategy.
  • Other Administrative tasks as needed.
