Billy Bishop Museum is seeking a Museum Assistant and Heritage Gardener to support the Museum’s busy summer season.

Billy Bishop Museum is a non-profit organization committed to preserving local history, including the childhood home of Victoria Cross recipient William Avery “Billy” Bishop. The Museum seeks to engage our community by connecting local stories to the Canadian war experience and broader currents of global history. The Museum’s exhibitions, collections, and programs reflect the courage, determination, and compassion that Canadian troops have demonstrated in their efforts to bring peace to nations around the world. The Museum also strives to ensure that the coming generation will continue to honour and remember the sacrifices made by all veterans.

The Museum Assistant and Heritage Gardener will assist in the creation of educational activities throughout the summer. They will assist with the Honouring Our Local Veterans program, which will include interviewing veterans and preparing commemorative plaques. They will also be responsible for the care of the Pollinator Habitat and Victorian Gardens on the Museum’s property.

Major duties/tasks will include:

  • Conduct original interviews with and research into veterans from Grey and Bruce Counties to create plaques for the 2025 Honouring Our Local Veterans program.
  •          Assist in the organization and hosting of 25 Years of Honouring Our Local Veterans, a reunion to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Honouring Our Local Veterans program at the Billy Bishop Museum.
  •          Maintain and care for the Victorian Gardens on the Billy Bishop Museum’s property. This includes the Pollinator Habitat, a part of the Pollinator Corridor across Owen Sound featuring only Indigenous plants.
  •          Create, organize, market, and conduct three “Fly By Saturday” events, focusing on creating fun drop-in activities for families visiting the Museum.
  •           Develop the “Bringing the Museum to You” program, including new themes for museum-in-a-box style outreach activities.
  •          Enhance the accessibility of the Museum’s collection through the addition of artifacts to our online database (PastPerfect).
  •          Assist the Curator by cataloging, photographing, and relocating artifacts in the permanent collection.
  •           Assist in running public events at the Museum, including Victorian Teas held in July and August
  •       Other duties as assigned.

Commitment: 35 hours per week for 8 weeks

Duration: Monday, June 30, 2025, to Friday, August
22, 2025

Wage: $17.20 per hour

Qualifications:

  •           Successfully completed at least one year of postsecondary degree in History, Cultural, Museum Studies, Library Sciences or related studies
  •           Good communication, research and organizational skills
  •           Independent worker
  •           Knowledge of care and maintenance of a garden
  •           Proficient in Microsoft Office and social media
  •           Use of PastPerfect or other collection database programs is an asset
