The Museum Cataloguer will be responsible for researching and handling the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre’s (CWHC) cultural assets under the guidance and supervision of the curator. They will research and catalogue new and existing accessions. This includes research using digital, physical, and archival resources; photographing and digitizing items, ensuring the accuracy of existing records, cleaning historic artefacts; maintaining clean, organized standards of collection management.

Throughout the course of their employment, they will produce an independent study project utilizing the CWHC archives and artefacts, which may include an exhibit, video, presentation, or other project.

The Museum Cataloguer will be responsible for conducting our “Out of the Collection” program, which provides insight into cultural assets not on display. They will identify artefacts viable for “Out of the Collection” sessions aimed at youth, seniors, and other demographics, such as newcomers and visitors from outside the area.

As part of their research and documentation, the Museum Cataloguer will identify new ways items in the museum collection can be used for exhibits and programs aimed at youth, seniors, and other demographics. These could be based on related topics, functionality of the items, and other factors as appropriate.

The Museum Cataloguer will be responsible for ensuring that they present research in a way that is both accurate and accessible. They explain information in a way that can be understood by the average visitor to the museum without sacrificing accuracy due to oversimplification.

The CWHC requires energetic employees to deliver exceptional visitor services by providing factual and interesting historic, local, and tourism-based information and responding accurately to public queries, in a friendly, professional manner.

For this position, good time-management skills are necessary to handle multiple tasks efficiently.

Cataloguers should have medium to advanced computer skills, including the use of specialized software like PastPerfect for cataloguing and database management. Previous experience in working in a museum is an asset.

Other tasks may include administrative duties, including telephone reception, processing donations and memberships, correspondence, handling cash and ticket sales, opening and closing procedures, site and museum maintenance.

Funding provided by Canada Summer Jobs (for youth 15 to 30) for 35 hours a week for 8 weeks.  Project ends August 30, 2025.
