POSITION SUMMARY:
Museum of Toronto (formerly Myseum) is a not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 2014. It connects Torontonians to the city and to each other. For over a decade, we have defined how Toronto communities tell, share, and learn about our unique and ever-evolving city through our histories and aspirations for the future.
Reporting to Museum of Toronto’s Executive Director, with project-level direction from two Associate Curators, the Assistant Curator role provides coordination, research, administrative support and curatorial input to the Museum’s Programming Team. The Programming Team is led by the Executive Director with the Director of Digital Programs, Associate Curators and the Program Manager. works with external curators, journalists, historians, designers and others on the realization of projects that support the Museum’s three-pronged programmatic model: at our 401 Richmond gallery space, across the city through pop-ups and activations and on digital platforms.
This role contributes to the organization’s collegial work environment and will help shape a city museum for one of the world’s most diverse cities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Administration:
- Provides overall administrative support in the coordination and execution of all programs and all related public events.
- Researches, sources and corresponds with external contributors for all programs including but not limited to talks, workshops, panel discussions and educational courses, managing contact information, communication and updates.
- Conducts curatorial research as requested, in accordance with experience and training
- Order materials for all programs and process paperwork related to contracts, quotes, permits, invoices and orders
- Assists with coordinating logistical needs for hosting guests including, honoraria, travel, lodging, transportation, meals, and any program-related logistics.
Exhibitions at 401 Richmond:
- Assists with coordinating exhibition-related didactic materials and documentation; writing and editing and exhibition copy.
- Obtain permissions and copyright clearance for images and maintain accurate credit lines
- Assists and supports the onsite exhibition install and uninstall process
City-wide Activations & Digital Programs:
- Assists in the production and set-up of off-site programs alongside and in consultation with the program manager
- Assists in the production of off-site video shoots, supporting all areas of production pre, during, and post-shoot. Book talent and crew, prepare locations for filming, ensure smooth operations on-set, distribute necessary material to cast and crew, and coordinate all logistics.
- Manage the content management system used to list programs, ensuring that details are inputted accurately and on time for marketing purposes
- As directed set up and strike programs, provide information to visitors and perform a limited scope of maintenance duties
- Assist in the research of secondary material for digital programs and content
Program Support:
- Support the selection, training and coordination of volunteers, including the preparation of volunteer materials for individual programs and events
- Updates volunteer requirements for each program and ensure their availability and assists associate curators in training
- Works with the program manager to support cycle of volunteer recruitment, including onboarding, scheduling, tracking, training and annual volunteer appreciation event
- Other duties as assigned
- Weekend and after-hours will be required.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree with training in museum studies is ideal, or any areas of studies in history, Anthropology, Ethnography, Journalism, Arts, Communications, Indigenous studies, English or Humanities
- Superior communication, time management and organizational skills
- Team player with great ability to collaborate
- Able to manage assigned work, including larger projects effectively and independently.
- Driving license preferred and some travel if required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of local history and culture
