Job Description
The Community Archival Intern will gain an in-depth knowledge of a community museum operation, that consists of artifacts, archival material and a fine art collection of 50 years. The collection also includes maps, publications, correspondence, photographs, artifacts, and exhibits of the mining, forestry, sporting and social history of the area. The Intern will become familiar with all aspects of work, and all areas of the museum operation. This is an excellent position for a candidate interested in Canadian history, and fine art, and looking for a foundational experience in the museum field. The incumbent will support ongoing curatorial research, educational initiatives, and upcoming exhibits. Atikokan has excellent recreational facilities and will appeal to the outdoor enthusiast.
The museum is a member of the Ontario Museum Association, and meets the annual standards of the Community Museum Operating Grant. The Intern will be expected to follow the established Town of Atikokan employment policies. The incumbent will prepare and implement logistics related to projects and exhibits and ensure adherence to timelines. For the creative and self-motivated, this is an opportunity to develop storytelling capabilities and content creation for all media.
Qualifications
The desired applicant will be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident entitled to work in Canada. The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma program. The position will be the first full-time employment for the candidate in their field of study. This internship is best suited to a candidate interested in local history and to those looking for practical experience in the heritage field. Applicants should have a high degree of computer literacy, including experience with PastPerfect, databases, digital imaging, photography, hardware and software, tourism, or education. Preference will be given to a candidate with a background in history, museum studies, archives, or a similar field. Previous work or volunteer experience with a museum or cultural institution is an asset. A high-level of organization, research and writing skills are necessary.
