The Cobalt Mining Museum (CMM) is a small museum with a unique and world-class collection of photographs, rock sample and artefacts relating to the Cobalt Silver Boom Era (1903 – 1920).  The CMM is a not-for-profit organization with charitable status; the museum infrastructure and the collection are owned by the Town of Cobalt and managed by the CMM Board of Directors.  The Museum is open to the public 7 days a week during the summer months, and several days a week for the rest of the year.

Responsibilities

  • On-Site Manager responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Cobalt Mining Museum
  • Act as liaison with Town of Cobalt, CMM Board of Directors
  • Care and maintenance of collection
  • Developing, researching and organising new exhibits
  • Maintaining, stocking, improving gift shop
  • Maintaining records, digitizing and cataloguing acquisitions
  • Cooperating with other regional museums and heritage associations; larger community
  • Raising funds, grants
  • Training and supervision of summer staff; assist in hiring of summer staff
  • Develop promotional materials, social media promotion
  • Connecting with community and organizing community events

Required skills

  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree (University or College) in relevant field (Curatorial or archive studies, History, Art History etc.)
  • Computer related skills including layout and design
  • Excellent communication skills, both writing and speaking, social media
  • Driver’s Licence or ability to acquire Driver’s Licence
  • Familiarity with role of museums in preservation of local, regional histories
  • Familiarity with data and collections management
  • Ability to work well with others

Preferred skills

  • Curatorial experience
  • Knowledge of local, northern Ontario history
  • Knowledge of labour history
  • Bilingual French/English
