EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – BILLY BISHOP MUSEUM, NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
CURATORIAL ASSISTANT (35 hours/wk) $18.05hr/4 months (Dependent on grants – grant restrictions apply).
The Curatorial Assistant will assist the Curator and the Exhibitions Committee by
conducting research into the Indigenous Veterans of Grey and Bruce Counties for
the creation of an exhibition. The successful candidates will have completed a post
secondary degree in History, Indigenous or Cultural Studies, Library Sciences,
Museum Studies or Education; directly related experience or lived knowledge will
be an asset. The individuals should be able to work with PastPerfect database and
be computer literate.
An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada
(non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident
status are not eligible); - are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
- are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment;
- and are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor’s, master’s or
doctorate) - Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in
YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed
Job Description:
- Assist in the creation of a knowledge base by performing research into historic
contributions of Indigenous Veterans from the Grey and Bruce County areas. - Conduct interviews with Indigenous Veterans, as well as Elders and Knowledge
Keepers on the lives of Indigenous Veterans before, during, and after their service. - Collaborate with Indigenous partner organizations on educational activities and
events. - To assist in maintaining and enhancing permanent exhibits and interactive
stations. - To assist in the registration and securing of old and new artefacts.
- To assist staff with public requests and research for the Museum.
- To professionally represent the Museum by welcoming visitors, taking
admission, providing information on current displays and events, and assisting
visitors in the giftshop over the phone, virtually or inspersion dependent. - To organize, re-home and catalogue the Museum’s collection.
- Other duties as required.
Commitment: 35 hours a week for 4 months
Wage: $18.05/hr
Duration: Tuesday, September 3, 2024 to Sunday, December 22, 2024
Qualifications:
- Successfully completed a postsecondary degree in History, Indigenous or
Cultural, Museum Studies, Library Sciences or related studies. - Good communication, research and organizational skills and independent
worker - Data entry skills
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media.
- Use of PastPerfect or other database programs is necessary.
