Position Summary
Are you passionate about natural history and museum work? We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Curatorial & Collections Assistant to support the documentation, care, and preservation of our fossil and paleontological magazine collections. This role offers hands-on experience in museum collections management, research, and public engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Cataloging and Documentation: Organize and document fossils and
archival materials using collections management software, ensuring
accurate and consistent metadata creation. - Collection Care: Implement appropriate handling and storage procedures
for fossils and archival materials, and assist with rehousing at-risk
items. - Research and Interpretation: Conduct research on collection items
to provide historical and scientific context; assist in developing
educational materials and interpretive content. - Public Engagement: Support programming and exhibitions that
showcase the collection, and assist with visitor inquiries. - Collections Software Evaluation: Research and recommend collections
management software suitable for our museum’s needs.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in a post-secondary program in Museum Studies, Archaeology, Paleontology, History, Library and Information Science, or a related field.
- Strong interest in natural history, paleontology, or collections management.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with collections management software (e.g., PastPerfect) is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Eligibility Requirements
This position is funded by Young Canada Works (YCW). Applicants must:
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
- Meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the YCW program.
- Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory.
