DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

POSITION TYPE: Full-time, 5 days a week (35 hr/week), typical workweek Monday to Friday with some evenings and weekends mandatory.

COMPENSATION: Annual salary of $80-85,000 with benefits/OMERS pension plan, free onsite parking.

The Director of Development & Communications will be instrumental in implementing the Art Gallery of Burlington’s strategic plan, aligning fundraising and marketing strategies, engaging audiences, inspiring philanthropic support, managing brand identity and communications, and raising awareness of the organization. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, they will build a strategic fund development program to exceed revenue goals and orchestrate the strategy for a successful capital campaign.

Overseeing the execution of the organization’s strategic fundraising agenda, their responsibility will be to solicit individual, organizational, and foundational support and grants to build capacity and further the organization’s mission. They will direct the efforts of the Marketing & Development Teams and coordinate with the Programming Department at strategic and tactical levels. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for tracking, measuring, and reporting milestones and act as a key point of contact for internal and external relationships regarding messaging and branding. They will oversee the content curation process, including gathering, organizing, and disseminating the AGB story to expand the reach and impact of the Gallery.

You’ll also play a key role in planning and hosting events to raise awareness and support. Your efforts will shape the future of the Gallery and our community’s arts and culture scene.

Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

Fund Development

  • Lead the annual fundraising planning process to develop a robust fundraising strategy and execute an annual giving plan to increase financial support from supporters and donors.
  • Provide direction and support to the development team to ensure appropriate stewardship and recognition of donors and supporters. Collaboratively oversee and develop key donor relationships to strengthen and grow long-term donations.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of short-, intermediate, and long-term individual gift donor strategies. Guide and support the development team to track and report relationship management activity, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospective and current mid-level, major and lead donors.
  • Lead the development and implementation of plans for securing major gifts and deferred gifts from donors through estate planning, trust and other types of gifts.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a comprehensive prospective individual and corporate donor list.
  • Strategize concept and plan for building a capital campaign for a new or revived facility.
  • Lead the development of fundraising campaigns, including annual appeals and direct marketing campaigns, to maximize yearly revenue.
  • Lead planning for signature fundraising event, REVEL: The Ultimate Art Bash and conceive and produce additional events that draw awareness and revenue.
  • Oversee the growth of the membership program.
  • Oversee administration of the Donor Management System.
  • Develop and monitor Development and Marketing Budgets.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of CRA fundraising regulations and guidelines and ensure compliance in all activities.

Communications & Marketing

  • Lead the annual marketing planning process to create a robust organizational marketing and public relations strategy to inspire and create excitement around AGB’s work.
  • Oversee the utilization of our existing network to promote and elevate AGB’s profile, presence, and brand reputation, including proactive engagement on social media platforms.
  • Build, protect and manage the organization’s brand, including ensuring adherence to branding guidelines, graphic standards, and monitoring of and advising the Executive Director on public relations issues/media crises management strategy.
  • Lead marketing team members to develop creative, high-quality and engaging content and multimedia assets to be leveraged across various platforms and channels such as videos, written messages and compelling visual assets.
  • Work with the Programming and Learning teams to develop effective ways to share our work and implement storytelling strategies that raise the profile of the Gallery, reaching new supporters and engage existing supporters.

Governance & Leadership

  • Participate in the leadership and governance of the organization, ensuring regular review of the strategic plan to ensure all development and marketing activities reflect and support the achievement of the gallery’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives.
  • Act as staff liaison to the Development and Fundraising Committee (DFC)
  • Provide quarterly progress reports to the Executive Director on meeting department mandates.
  • Manage development and marketing staff, help them grow through professional development and mentoring, and regularly assess their performance based on agreed outcomes and responsibilities.
