Job Title: Educational Programmer
Reporting Relationship: The Educational Programmer reports to the CEO/Curator of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum
Job Purpose: To develop and implement the educational programing for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum responsible for creating engaging public and educational programs for the community, its youth and visitors. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable, collaborative, and creative, with strong communication skills for developing programs that inspire curiosity across various formats, including tours, school field trips, camps, public events, workshops, hands-on activities, and digital engagements.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop, research and provide educational programs for children, students and/or interested community group
- Plan and execute the Kid Curator camps
- Coordinate the Museum’s walking and bike tours with volunteers and conduct walking tours of the town or museum tours as required.
- Coordinate and execute the Tiny Museum for the community and school program.
- Assist with all programs including monthly lecture series, receptions, August Heritage Festival, etc
- Explore the development of corporate programming for the conferences and business visitation to Niagara-on-the-Lake
- Lead the development and organization of education collection for hands on experiences at the Museum
- Assist with the implementation of the planned exhibition schedule as required
Secondary Responsibilities:
· Answer the phone at the Museum, greet visitors, receive admissions, direct patrons to the Museum, answer questions by visitors, POS entry of gift shop sales
· Any other duties as required by the position
Physical Demands:
- May be required to load and unload materials for offsite events and setting up small tents
- May be required to perform small maintenance duties, set up tables and chairs for special events, move exhibit cases and other materials for displaying exhibitions, and move artefacts in and out of storage
- May be required to perform walking tours through the Old Town
- Required to work outdoors for offsite events
Working Conditions and Environment:
- Required to work weekends and some evenings for special events and lectures
- Required to work with some chemicals used for maintenance purposes, cleaning of exhibition cases, mounting of exhibition text, preventative conservation, and accessioning artefacts
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Knowledge of the History of Niagara is preferred
- Experience developing and running Museum Educational programs required
- Knowledge of Microsoft 365, Word, Publisher and Excel
- Experience working on database systems, specifically PastPerfect
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of theory and practice of museum operations including research, collections management, artefact conservation and exhibit development
- University degree with graduate work Education, Public History, Museum Studies or related field
- Ontario College of Teachers certification is an asset
- First Aid certification, clean criminal record and vulnerable sector check, and a valid Ontario “G” class driver’s license
