About the position 

 

Under the direction of the Head of Technical Operations, the Exhibit Technician plays a vital role in ensuring visitors have an engaging and enriching experience when visiting the CMN’s galleries. The incumbent will contribute to the success of museum exhibitions through their technical expertise, attention to detail, and dedication to preserving and presenting natural and cultural heritage for public enjoyment and education. The main responsibilities of the position are exhibition maintenance, installation and de-installation of Permanent, Temporary and Special Exhibitions and working in the workshop, with a focus on reorganization and sustainability. 

 

The incumbent will be required to work shifts outside of regular office hours to accommodate the CMN being open daily, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Eligibility criteria 

 

This position is open to all Employees of the Canadian Museum of Nature and any members of the public who meet the qualifications below. 

*Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada. 

 

 

Education and training: 

 

Completion of a post-secondary education in one of the following disciplines: Design, Construction or Carpentry, Theatre Production/Set Design, Museum Studies and/or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training. 

 

Language requirements: 

 

Either English or French  
Bilingual (English and French) will be considered an asset 

 

Experience: 

 

  • Experience in physically installing and dismantling exhibitions 

  • Experience in maintaining exhibitions (including cabinetry repairs, adjusting mounts and cleaning display cases) 

  • Experience in using a wide range of tools and equipment for exhibition installations  

  • Experience with safely handling artifacts 

  • Experience following floorplans for accurate placement of exhibition elements 

  • Experience in refurbishing and remediating exhibition elements 

  • Experience with maintaining audio visual equipment an asset 

  • Experience working in a museum environment is an asset 

 

 

Working conditions:  

  • Regular working hours start at 7:00 AM 

  • Weekend work may be required 

  • Work requires the ability to lift/move heavy objects up to 25 kg
