WALL SPACE is currently hiring for the position of Gallery Manager. We are looking for a team-leader with a strong background in sales.
The ideal candidate must have a background in art and sales, with 1 – 2 years experience in managing a team. They possess an entrepreneurial spirit with a strong willingness to uplift the gallery’s represented artists, work closely with and build relationships with clients, be diligent in overseeing the day-to-day functioning of the gallery and its employees, have a strong work ethic and willingness to take on a wide range of tasks as required. This is a full-time position.
What We Are Looking For:
- 1-2 years experience in managing a team
- A friendly and flexible personality with excellent communication skills
- Education or background/training in the fine arts (MA or BA in Art History, BFA, Museum Studies, gallery experience or other relevant experience)
- Track record of successful sales experience (In art or general retail)
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and problem solve
- Exceptional time-management skills
- Experience in managing a team
- The ability to establish a rapport with clients and provide exceptional customer service
- A good sense of colour/design principles
- Excellent writing and proofreading skills, with the ability to take on the appropriate tone for different audiences and media
- The ability to stand or sit for long periods, climb ladders and lift heavy artwork
- The ability to work some evenings and most Saturdays
- Valid driver’s license and access to a car considered an asset
- Fluency in French considered an asset
Role Description
- Overseeing the day-to-day management of gallery staff and tasks
- Building strong collector relationships and working directly with clients to help them find the right artworks for their home/collection
- Leading and supporting a strong, upbeat sales environment
- Facilitating gallery outreach through networking opportunities and building relationships with media outlets
- Handling exhibition press releases and marketing plans
- Corresponding with and maintaining relationships with artists
- Staying current with the gallery’s represented artists and practices
- Managing gallery inventory and making sure all staff are trained accordingly
- Aiding in exhibition installations and the rotation of artworks through the gallery space
- Overseeing the proper care and handling of artworks in inventory,
- making sure all staff are properly trained in artwork handling and inventory management
- Supporting the curator in the creation of the exhibition schedules and planning of additional programming/community outreach
- Grant writing, award applications, and letters of nomination/recommendation for gallery artists
