Purpose of Position:

The Indigenous Community Educator will assist in the daily operations of Ska-Nah-Doht Village and Museum at the Longwoods Road Conservation Area and the C. M. Wilson Learning Centre at C.M. Wilson Conservation Area.  The position involves the teaching of educational programs, including Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Environmental Studies programming. The position involves the development and execution of special events and other forms of community engagement delivered at Longwoods Road Conservation Area, C.M. Wilson Conservation Area, and throughout the Lower Thames watershed.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering curriculum-based and special interest education programs, with both and Indigenous heritage/cultural themes (including Indigenous Traditional Knowledge) and environmental (water, wildlife, plants, and soil) for school and community groups, both outdoor and in-class.
  2. Deal with public inquiries and encourage a positive sense of value in our watershed.
  3.  Implement and initiate programs, for events and target groups that involve participants and stir a connection to the wonders that surround us.
  4. Encourage and maintain, with school teachers, appropriate student behavior conducive to class learning, providing a safe learning environment for all visiting individuals.
  5. Develop effective displays that provide interaction/manipulation opportunities.
  6. Provide mentoring to co-op students that enables and empowers their abilities and sense of worth.
  7.  Daily program setup and cleanup.
  8.  Grant searches and applications, including working with donors, as required.
  9. Develop and maintain strong, positive relationships with community members, donors, service clubs, and private businesses.
  10. Assist with the development and delivery of programming at Longwoods Road Conservation Area and C.M. Wilson Learning Centre.
  11. Attend/participate in staff, Board or Committee meetings.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Indigenous teachings relevant to this position;
  • Knowledge of environmental and conservation topics, including water, wildlife, plants, and soil.
  • Proven ability to deal with public in a positive manner;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, tact and judgement;
  • Demonstrable class / group management skills in both indoor and outdoor settings;
  • Comfortable working with students and adults, all ages and abilities, in all weather conditions;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Highly developed analytical, organizational and administrative skills and practices;
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with the public, media and community organizations;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize;
  • Life experience, volunteer history, and community leadership highly valued;
  • A Post-Secondary diploma or degree in Anthropology, Environmental Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, or a related field;
  • A Bachelor of Education degree would be beneficial;
  • Competence with MS Office software, Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Must be flexible with scheduling; hours include weekends and some evenings.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and acceptable drivers abstract;
  • Able to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check.

Work Conditions:

  • Museum/office and outdoor environment;
  • Frequent interaction with the public and employees;
  • Extended periods of walking on uneven ground;
  • Irregular hours as required;
  • Occasional travel;
  • 35 hours per week;
  • Occasional lifting of >25lbs, with some manual labour;
  • Public presentations of varying topic, length, setup, equipment needed etc.;
  • Attend meetings;
  • Operation of desktop computer and peripherals;
  • Supervise co-op students and summer staff in various projects.

This is a full-time position, with a 3-month probationary period.

Compensation & Hours:

  • Wage: $29.40/hour
  • Weekly Hours: 35 per week; regular hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. possible depending on work location. Further weekend, evening, and early morning work may be required. Half hour unpaid lunch.
  • Vacation Time: The employee shall be eligible for all statutory holidays and 2 weeks vacation prorated in the first calendar year of employment.
  • Benefits: Eligible for benefits RRSPs pending a satisfactory review after 3-month probationary period.
