The Kingston and Area Association of Museums (KAM) is a collaborative organization dedicated to supporting, promoting, and strengthening the museum,
heritage, and cultural sectors in Kingston. Through advocacy, funding management, and community engagement, KAM plays a vital role in ensuring the sustainability and growth of local museums and heritage sites.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Managing Director is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of KAM through collaboration, operational leadership, and fiscal responsibility. As a
membership-driven agency, the Managing Director ensures that the organization meets the needs of its members while fostering relationships with stakeholders, securing funding, and promoting cultural initiatives. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director works to advance KAM’s mission and strengthen its impact within the cultural sector.
Hours: 37,5 hours a week
Hourly rate: $27 per hour

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Operations Management:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of KAM, ensuring alignment with the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.
- Supervise and support permanent staff, occasional employees, and student placements.
- Manage organizational files and records, ensuring efficient documentation and reporting.
- Provide monthly progress reports to the Board and required reports to funding bodies and collaborators.
Board & Governance Support:
- Maintain open and effective communication with the Board of Directors, ensuring informed decision-making.
- Make recommendations to the Board that aligns the direction of KAM with sector priorities.
- Prepare meeting agendas and supporting materials for Board meetings.
- Seek Board approvals for major decisions during regular meetings and as required.
- Identify and assess internal and external issues that may impact KAM, providing recommendations to the Board.
Financial Management & Fundraising:
- Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the Board.
- Prepare and process financial records for bookkeeping and payroll.
- Oversee grant writing and funding applications to secure financial support for KAM initiatives.
- Administer the annual City of Kingston Heritage Fund grant competition.
- Process payments for staff, contractors, and service providers.
Marketing & Communications:
- Through collaborative efforts with membership, the managing director must remain current to the needs of the membership through communication and connection on various platforms.
- Oversee KAM’s marketing, communications, and public relations efforts, including social media and membership engagement.
- Ensure consistent and clear communication with KAM members, the cultural sector, and the broader community through a broad range of communication platforms.
- Ensure alignment with granting requirements and expectations are met regarding acknowledgement of funding allocations.
External Relations & Advocacy:
- Represent KAM at community events, strengthening relationships with stakeholders.
- Serve as a liaison between KAM and relevant City of Kingston committees.
- Collaborate with organizations such as the Kingston Arts Council, the Ontario Museum Association, and other cultural partners.
- Management of AGM and other special events that are facilitated by KAM.
Other Duties:
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Board.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- 3-5 years of experience in non-profit management, museum administration, or cultural sector leadership.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the Kingston and area museum and heritage sector is an asset.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Demonstrated success in leading cohesive and motivated teams to meet corporate goals, objectives and initiatives.
- Experience in fundraising, marketing, and stakeholder engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of secondary school
- Completion of a degree or diploma in museum studies, public administration or related field of education an asset
- Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and grant administration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong skill-set working with computers and office technology, Adobe, Microsoft and social media platforms.
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated success with public engagement, stakeholder management and membership relations.
