Reporting to the Muse Director, the Museum Curator is a creative and motivated individual who will coordinate exhibitions, build educational programming, and conduct research at the Lake of the Woods Museum. The Curator is responsible for the planning, development, coordination, and execution of permanent, temporary and travelling exhibits. They will develop and present educational programming for students, children, and adults. The Curator will conduct research related to exhibitions, educational programming and public enquiries.
Key Responsibilities
- Consults with the Museum Advisory Committee to design, plan, construct, research and present an annual schedule of exhibitions.
- Coordinates and manages exhibitions including budgets, contracts, shipping, installation, communication, collaborative partnerships and record-keeping.
- Works with community exhibition committees.
- Researches, writes, and oversees the production of exhibit catalogues.
- Coordinates the borrowing of exhibitions from other museums, galleries, and other organizations.
- Coordinates the loan of the Lake of the Woods Museum’s travelling exhibitions.
- Researches, writes and produces interpretive text, social media content, and articles.
- Liaises with the Douglas Family Art Centre staff, local, provincial museum groups and organizations and governmental bodies.
- Builds and maintains good relations with Kenora and area educators, and other community partners.
- Plans, develops, implements or supervises, and evaluates all interpretive and educational programming which may include: educational exhibitions, printed materials, demonstrations, tours, classes, lectures, workshops, special events, speaking engagements.
- Coordinates and manages all programming including budgets, communication, collaborative partnerships, evaluation and record-keeping.
- Organizes and maintains program equipment and supplies and ensures proper health and safety practices and clean facilities are maintained throughout the Museum.
- Works with community partners for the presentation of programs.
- Researches, writes and oversees the production of programming material.
- Carries out research necessary for exhibits, interpretive material, and programming.
- Assists the public with their research requests,
either providing them with the necessary resources, referring them to the proper resources, or by doing the research for them in cases where they are unable to access the resources themselves. - Assists with front desk reception, taking admissions, making gift shop sales, opening and closing of museum, schedules special visits/receptions/rentals, reconciles cash at day’s end when required.
- Assists with fundraising events / special events / receptions – scheduling, marketing, set-up, take-down, overseeing when required.
- Encourages and maintains partnerships with like-minded agencies related to job activities – e.g. schools, day cares, senior centres, other museums, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts or college diploma in museum studies, history, education, library and information.
- Three years of experience in museum curatorial work that includes collection development, programming, exhibits, budgeting, planning, and working cooperatively with other museum departments and functions at a senior management level.
- Knowledge and experience in the theory and practice of museum work including educational and public programming, research, exhibit development, local history and interpretation.
- Strong interest in and knowledge of local history.
- Computer related experience in a work environment with a variety of software applications.
- Experience on Mac systems.
- Good interpersonal skills, including an appreciation for the need for confidentiality, tact, and discretion.
- Genuine interest and demonstrated skill in working with the public, with a strong commitment to public service.
- Strong organizational and planning skills, combined with creativity particularly in the area of educational programming.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
