We are looking for a Supervisor, Conservation and Technical Services

As a Supervisor, Conservation and Technical Services, you will be responsible for overseeing the activities of conservation and technical staff, and supervising contractors, interns, and volunteers; providing advice on the care and preservation and preparation of museum artifacts and archival collections; overseeing the effective operations of the CWM conservation and technical services facilities; assisting in establishing operational budgets and ensuring accurate reporting on project costs; developing contacts and networks within the conservation community to further the preservation strategies of the CWM and to promote CWM conservation activities in fulfillment of Museum mandate; performing other related duties as required.

Minimum of Three (3) to Five (5) years of relevant experience in:

  • Supervision of staff, volunteers, interns, and/or outside contractors in a museum environment
  • Handling museum artifacts/works of art;
  • Organizing and maintaining workshops and conservation labs, and their tools, equipment and related materials;
  • Monitoring costs for the treatment and preservation of artifacts;
  • Evaluating design drawings, facilities reports and other documents, in order to contribute technical details for purposes of conservation;
  • Managing contractors for external conservation or artifact display preparation services;
  • Working with the following software: word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel), and E-mail (Outlook).

Knowledge of:

  • General Museology principles and practices;
  • Preparation and installation of artifacts in a museum exhibition setting;
  • Requirements for packing and transportation of museum artifacts;
  • Collections storage principles and practices;
  • Museological practices in the care of collections;
  • The safe use of related tools and equipment and laboratory products;
  • Human and financial resources principles and practices.

Education:  A degree in Conservation or a degree in a related discipline plus a 3-year college diploma in Museum Studies, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Membership to a professional conservation association is an asset.

Compensation: E7 ($89,195 to $110,385)
Status: Permanent Full-Time Position (# 1 0451)
Security Level:  Reliability Status
Location: 1, Vimy Place, Ottawa, Ontario
